Growing up in a small village in rural Lower Bavaria, Sam Irl learned to play the piano and organ at an early age, later moving on to jazz piano and first attempts at music production as well as DJ-ing.
The lack of an existing underground music scene in his home town provided him and his friends with a healthy need and rooted foundation to organize their own regular parties at a local farm and smaller venues in the area, including on the banks of the River Danube, playing eclectic music ranging from roots reggae, hip hop, funk, broken beat, house and UK garage and collaborating on musical projects, such as making hip hop beats for regional MC’s.
Since moving to Vienna over a decade ago and completing his degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Sam has been working as producer, DJ and sound engineer in the vibrant Viennese underground scene.
This diverse musical background is a strong influence on his productions, blending sample-based MPC grooves, jazz harmonies, dub and analogue synthesizers.
In 2007 he released his first EP on Pulver Records and since then has released an album (“Raw Land“, 2016) and multiple EP’s on Munich’s Jazz & Milk Recordings.
Besides that he has put out records on labels such as S3A’s Sampling As An Art Records (Paris, 2017), Johannes Albert’s Frank Music (Berlin, 2013), Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings (London, “Kutmah presents Worldwide Family Vol. 2”, with Richard Eigner of Ritornell, 2012), Bonzzaj Recordings (Bern, with Dorian Concept, 2008), Fresh Minute Music (London, 2009) and Bagage Musique (Munich).
His tracks are regularly played on the radio and in DJ-sets by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mr. Scruff, Lefto, Alex Barck (Jazznova), Jimpster, Mr. Beatnick, Mad Mats, Session Victim, Roman Rauch and more.
Apart from his solo music, Sam releases records together with Viennese techno pioneer Patrick Pulsinger as “Pulsinger & Irl”, which focuses more on dub-heavy, analogue house and techno.
Together they have played live-shows at Berghain / Panorama Bar, Sonar Festival Barcelona, Sziget Festival, Ars Electronica, Zukunft Zurich and more.
He is also a member of “SKYMAX”, a multinational trio consisting of the Finnish underground producer Stiletti-Ana and the local Viennese musician Feater.
